Creating a presence on the web

This practical workshop has educators in mind and is simply designed to remove the mysteries associated with online publishing, web hosting and establishing your own domain presence on the web.

Description

The workshop is designed for educators who wish to take their use of the Internet that one step further. The hands-on session is designed for educators, without prior knowledge in web page or domain name creation, who would like to know how to setup a personal or course based web site as well as a related blog (web log) and/or image gallery that supports their research, teaching and academic roles.

Software packages and web based applications that will be utilized and presented during the workshop include:

Trivantis Lectora, Dreamweaver or RapidWeaver
Blogger: a simple to use web based tool that allows you to create and manage your own blog
Flickr and/or Picassa: an online image hosting service
Web Hosting Control Panel: a web based interface that illustrates how web sites and domains are managed

The other materials that will be created during the workshop will all be published on the Internet.

Outcomes

At the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

Preparing and organizing resources for your web publishing project
Create a web site using templates or from scratch
Add pages, text, navigation, and images
Import text files, images, audio, video, animations into your web site
Publish/distribute content in HTML or CD formats
Create and manage a blog
Publish quickly and efficiently to your blog via email or a simple two click web based process
Manage web space and personal web domain
